Joy

Thomas Joy and His Descendants in the Lines of His Sons, Samuel of Boston, Joseph of Hingham, Ephraim of Berwick: A Portfolio of Family Papers, by James Richard Joy (New York, 1900), 225 pages (including a 15-page index).  The Digital Edition, published on CD-ROM, March 2010.

A well documented account of the Joy family through eight, and sometimes nine generations, embracing the descendants of Thomas Joy, for whom the first record in America is found in 1636 in Boston, Massachusetts. Thomas was a talented builder and architect, noted for designing and constructing, among other things, the Town House in Boston (1658, destroyed by fire in 1711) and the “Old Ship” Meeting House in Hingham.

In 1637, Thomas married Joan Gallop (Gallup), daughter of John and Christobel Gallop.  Thomas and Joan had ten children of record, including six sons.  Of these six, one died in childhood and two “probably died young,” as they are not mentioned in their father’s will.

The volume contains a biography of the immigrant ancestor (26 pages); genealogies of three sons: Samuel (31 pages), Joseph (100 pages), and Ephraim (14 pages); and an appendix (31 pages) containing notes on the Jay (Joy) family of Norfolk, England; documents relating to Thomas the colonist; and genealogical notes on families of the name in Nantucket, Maine, Pennsylvania,  D. C., Delaware, South Carolina, New York, and Maryland.

Other surnames found most frequently in this volume include BATES, BROWN, CLARK, COFFIN, DAVIS, FISHER, FOSS, FRENCH, GALLOP (GALLUP), GREEN, HALL, HUNT, JOHNSON, LINCOLN, NASH, NASON, NICHOLS, PARSONS, PRATT, REED, SMITH, TIRRELL, TORREY, TOWER, TURNER, WHITE, and WILLIAMS.  For a complete list, see the on-line index
