This magisterial history was edited by “The leading historical authority in Connecticut.” The first volume contains a general history of Hartford County and a more detailed history of Hartford City. The second volume contains historical accounts of other towns in the county: Avon, Berlin, Bloomfield, Bristol, Burlington, Canton, East Granby, East Hartford, East Windsor, South Windsor, Enfield, Farmington, Unionville, Glastonbury, Granby, Hartland, Manchester, Marlborough, New Britain, Newington, Plainville, Simsbury, Southington, Suffield, West Hartford, Wethersfield, Rocky Hill, Windsor, and Windsor Locks.
Trumbull himself authored a brief treatise on "Indians of the Connecticut Valley." The remainder of the publication consists of contributions by "subject matter" experts, including Increase Tarbox, Sherman W. Adams, Mary K. Talcott, William A. Ayers, and William I. Fletcher, among others. One of our personal favorites: Professor Henry A. Beer’s learned, albeit often pedantic, review of Hartford’s literary traditions. Noted authors included Harriet Beecher Stowe, Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain), Noah Webster, and "Peter Parley" (for whom see also the History of Ridgefield). We were also very pleased with William Brockelsby's beautifully illustrated chapter on architecture in the City of Hartford
